Musculoskeletal health is a highly significant issue for the health system in Switzerland. Nationwide, musculoskeletal ailments are responsible for about 30% of all consultations with physicians. National Research Programme 53 «Musculoskeletal Heath – Chronic Pain» (NRP 53) is a programme of research on musculoskeletal health in the Swiss population. The aim is to develop ways to promote musculoskeletal health more effectively.
The five-year interdisciplinary research programme will analyse the status of musculoskeletal health in Switzerland and identify underlying determinants. Intervention studies will produce new information on ways to optimize musculoskeletal health in specific groups in the population that are at high risk for musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal disorders are often accompanied by long-term, chronic pain. Through thorough investigation of chronic pain, NRP 53 aims to develop new therapies for better treatment of pain in the musculoskeletal system.
